About Fish Camp
Fish Camp's mission strives to welcome freshmen into the Aggie Family by sharing the traditions and values of Texas A&M University and building long-term relationships that embody the Aggie spirit. Our vision is an Aggie Family supporting all freshmen.
Our History

The First Fish Camp
Known simply as “Freshman Camp” was hosted by YMCA Director Gordon Gay in 1954. He took a group of freshmen camping at Fort Parker State Park in Mexia, Texas.

Gordon Gay’s Goal
Gordon’s goal for this camp was to teach freshmen about Texas A&M University and its traditions in a place where young men could also develop friendships with their fellow peers.

Success of Fish Camp
The success of the first Fish Camp led to the implementation of an annual trip occurring before classes started each fall for freshmen to continue learning about being a part of the Aggie family.

The Move to Lakeview
In 1957, Fish Camp changed sites and relocated to Lakeview Methodist Conference Center in Palestine, Texas, with the only exception being in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fish Camp 2020 was hosted virtually.

Fish Camp Namesakes
Fish Camp is divided into multiple sessions and camps. Each camp is named after someone who has contributed to Texas A&M in a positive way.
Fish Camp receives several hundred nominations for potential Namesakes every year.
Being selected as a Fish Camp Namesake is considered an honor because Namesakes have the opportunity to interact with and impact two chairpersons, 24 counselors and around 150 freshmen in their camp.
Namesake nominations typically open in October and close in November with decisions made by December. If you have nominated someone, you will find out the results in March when the information becomes publicly available.
Namesake nominations are now closed!
If you have questions about the Namesake selections process, please email Ava Ray: ava_ray@tamu.edu.
