FISH CAMP HISTORY
The first Fish Camp (known simply as “Freshman Camp”) was held by YMCA Director Gordon Gay in 1954 when he took a group of freshmen camping at Fort Parker State Park in Mexia, Texas. Gray’s goal for this camp was to teach the freshmen more about Texas A&M University and its traditions in a place where the young men could also develop a friendship with their fellow peers. The success of the first Fish Camp led to the implementation of an annual trip occurring before classes started each Fall for freshmen to continue learning about being a part of the Aggie family. In 1957, Fish Camp changed sites and moved their camp to Lakeview Methodist Conference Center in Palestine, Texas, and has been held there each year since (the only exception being in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing Fish Camp to be held virtually).

Fish Camp has held its three-day, two-night sessions at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center for over 60 years! The Lakeview Staff have become a huge part of the Aggie experience. Freshmen and Fish Camp members occupy the facilities for their large presentations, camp times, meals, and lodging as well as some of the outdoor structures for free time activities
